More about singings
We welcome one and all to come sing with us from The Sacred Harp (1991 Denson edition). Don’t worry – no prior experience is necessary or expected, and beginners and curious onlookers are always warmly welcome. We also have loaner copies of this tunebook available to use during the singing, as well as copies to purchase. Feel free to bring a snack to share at the break if you’re so inclined.
The Sacred Harp consists largely of early American devotional music, including hymns, fugues, anthems, etc. Coming out of a rich and uniquely American tradition, this music is written a cappella (without musical accompaniment), notated in shape notes, and sung in 4-part harmony. The name ‘Sacred Harp’ refers to the human voice itself, and as such there are no harps or instruments involved. Come experience the delight of singing in harmony among friends! For more about Sacred Harp singing in Maine visit www.maineshapenotesinging.org (also on facebook). Another great resource is www.fasola.org.
*Note about schedule exceptions: the singing occurs every 1st Sunday except for the month of October due to a conflict with the New England Sacred Harp Convention.
