All are welcome to come sing with us at our Portland monthly Sacred Harp Singing, where we sing out of “The Sacred Harp” 1991 Denson edition. Loaner copies of this tunebook are available to use during the singing, as well as copies to purchase. No experience expected or necessary – beginners and curious onlookers are always warmly welcome. The Sacred Harp consists largely of early American devotional music, including hymns, fugues, anthems, etc. Coming out of a rich and uniquely American tradition, this music is written a cappella (without musical accompaniment), notated in shape notes, and sung in 4-part harmony. The name ‘Sacred Harp’ refers to the human voice itself, and as such there are no harps or instruments involved. Come experience the delight of singing in harmony among friends! Join us on the 1st Sunday of every month at the Portland New Church, 302 Stevens Ave. 2-5pm. Feel free to bring a snack to share at the break. FMI: 956-7022 or www.maineshapenotesinging.org.
