Come sing with us! The Portland Maine Weekly Sacred Harp Singing is an open community singing where all voices are welcome! We get together every Tuesday evening and sing from the 1991 version of “The Sacred Harp.” No musical or singing experience is expected or necessary, and loaner song books are always available to use during the singing. Sacred Harp singings are participatory events – there are no auditions, no performances, and no audiences. Rather, we sing for one another, and for the sheer enjoyment of singing itself. Also known as shape note music, Sacred Harp music is a form of early American devotional music that comes out of a rich living tradition. Deeply rooted in the American South where it has been kept alive by generations of singing families, churches, and communities, Sacred Harp music and the love of singing it has spread across the country and around the world within the past 40 years. Written and sung as a four part harmony, the music is notated with shapes to facilitate learning and sight reading music (it works!).
Come along any Tuesday evening & check it out – we sing from 7-9pm at the First Parish Church, located at 425 Congress St. in Portland, Maine. Whether it’s your first Sacred Harp singing or your thousandth, we look forward to singing with you!
