Ellsworth, Note New location The Maine Balkan Choir Hancock County Oblast will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church fellowship hall in Ellsworth. 121 Bucksport Rd, Ellsworth, ME 04605 This group was started in 1998 by the late Kirsten Stockman and Joe Niemczura. We were in pandemic hibernation. This group specializes in Slavic folk singing in the village style. Due to the bad news in Ukraine, we are preparing a program of Ukraine folk music. We will present a concert in late spring and the proceeds will be donated to a Ukraine children's charity. When we were planning this, we were pleasantly surprised by the statewide interest in learning about the folk music and folk culture of Ukraine, and so you will certainly see there are two other sub-groups with this name. If you are closer to Belfast or Portland, please do join the other group; each is singing the same material. When we do the concert we will assemble all three groups as well as some musicians. The main benefit event will be May 21st at the Eastern Orthodox Greek Church in Portland ( see separate event announcement). You do not need prior choral experience to join.

Hallowell,
The Huddled Masses Orchestra was active in Maine a few years back and you may recall that we played the first Zwiefacher dance sessions at the Down East Country dance festival. Our members also played at the folk dance party for that event, as well as festivals and wedding receptions around the state. We also did may Oktoberfest events. In 2023 we re-formulated into a twelve-piece brass band. There is a vibrant scene for Serbian and Rom dance music and in the Balkans, a long tradition of brass bands.
We rehearse regularly. On April 8th, we will be having a daytime rehearsal at the Hallowell Multicultural Center which is a central location for our far-flung members. We are looking for additional low brass (trombone or baritone horn) players to join us. The low brass provide a pulsating engine that propels the jalopy down the road when the band takes off. We have some really terrific players but many belong to multiple bands and so we need some backups.
There is a learning curve for Balkan music which involves the minor keys, the rhythms and the teamwork. We do have sheet music though in the long run the band will work with lead sheets. We can teach you the style. The instrumentation includes brass instruments ( trumpets, trombones, tuba, Eb sax, baritone horn), two accordions, and percussion (trap, dumbeq, tupan, and poink).

Hallowell,
The Maine Balkan Choir has been preparing a program of Ukrainian folk music this winter. We have gathered weekly in three subgroups - Ellsworth, Belfast and Portland. The goal is to sing as authentically as possible. The tunes for this event include love songs, pop tunes and lullabies. The charity event will take place May 21st in Portland.
All three subgroups will sing together for a daytime rehearsal in Hallowell at the Multicultural Center. It is not too late to join and see what it is about. We expect forty singers to be there that day. Newcomers are asked to send an email to [email protected] so we can send a copy of the sheet music and other aides, via the internet.
We start at 09:45 and will review the songs. We sing in Ukrainian, which may seem daunting except that we have techniques for learning Slavic languages that help. The songs are often in minor keys with haunting melodies and Slavic harmony. We are humbled to include some native-speakers of Ukrainian and Russian in our ranks for this event and we invite recent arrivals to Maine to join us.

Brunswick,

Back by popular demand, singer-songwriter Ellis Paul will appear at the UUCB Concerts for a Cause concert series at the UU Church in Brunswick on May 6, 2023 at 7:30. He will be accompanied by Radoslav Lorkovic on piano. The proceeds from this concert will benefit the Brunswick Area Teen Center and Maine Family Planning.
Ellis Paul’s 30th Anniversary Tour with Radoslav Lorković will be coming home to Maine and showcase songs from his forthcoming new album “55” in this performance. Paul is a popular singer-songwriter who is an astute storyteller, poetic and literate, with a stellar stage presence. Lorković is a Croatian born and classically trained folk and blues musician known in particular for his extraordinary flair on the piano and accordion.
Some artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era overall. Few others, for whatever genius they may possess, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond, be it in a coming of age, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences.
Ellis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some may refer to him as a folk singer, he is more, for lack of a better word, a singular storyteller, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. The hope for redemption. Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. The sharing of love…, intimate, passionate and enduring.
Listen to Ellis Paul: Scarecrow in a Corn Maze
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Students/Children $10. Available at the church office, Gulf of Maine Books, or online at Ticketstripe.com/ellispaul

Bar Harbor,
For centuries, Downeast Maine has flourished as a crossroads for many styles of music and dance: Acadian, Cape Breton, Irish, Scottish and Québécois – just to name a few. The Acadia Trad Festival is dedicated to promoting education and appreciation of these traditions through an annual celebration held June 26-July 2, 2023 at the beautiful oceanfront campus of College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Since 2013, the Acadia Trad Festival has brought world-class performers, students and the public together for awe-inspiring nightly concerts and dances, as well as daily classes and workshops.
Students of all ability levels and a wide range of ages (adults and children 12 years and up) are welcome. Full-time students spend the week in intensive studies, jam sessions and fun. A wide selection of afternoon workshops, dances and concerts are open to the public. Instrumental classes are taught in the aural tradition, with an emphasis on learning by ear.
The Acadia Festival of Traditional Music & Dance will host a faculty lineup that honors and celebrates traditional music and dance while contributing to its evolution.
Each year, these five core disciplines will be featured: Fiddle, Guitar, Piano, Flute, and Dance. In addition to our core disciplines, the festival will include at least three additional disciplines each year. In 2023, we will offer: Accordion, Bouzouki, Harp, Community Singing, and Composition. Class sizes are limited – don’t delay in signing up!

Fiddles, guitars, accordions, concertinas, mandolins, dulcimers, etc. welcome. We also have a keyboard available. Many of our tunes come out of the on-the-go collections - Portland, Waltz Books, Fiddlers Fake Book, Fiddlers Repertoire. We love to try tunes from other places as well. If you have printed copies, bring a few for some of the note readers. We are a great venue for new musicians looking to play with others, long time players wanting to work out a new tune at a slower pace, or for folks that love to play but just aren't comfortable at dance tempo. We welcome ear players, sheet music players, and folks somewhere in between. Every evening is a different mix of tunes depending on what is top of mind for folks that night. We encourage you to come with a few tunes in mind to share throughout the evening.
