Looking for something fun to do on New Year’s Eve? Come to the Blue Hill Public Library for a New Year’s Eve Contra Dance, a fundraiser for the library, on Sunday December 31. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m for a dessert bar with drinks and refreshments to raise money for the library, and the dance will start at 7:00 p.m. Admission for the event will be $20 a person or a maximum of $50 per household. All proceeds are to benefit the library.
The dance will feature local musicians Gus La Casse and Pepin Mittelhauser, and caller Bill Shubeck. Gus La Casse explores the past and future of traditional fiddle music, his repertoire reflecting his innovative spirit and dedication to the Cape Breton and Acadian fiddle traditions. Pepin Mittelhauser has made the rounds in the Downeast musical community, playing tenor guitar and mandolin for contra dances, weddings, and performances. Together, Gus & Pepin are known to tear up the strings, driving the music forward with such power that casualties of broken bow hairs and snapped strings are all too common. Bill Shubeck is versatile and accomplished as a musician, having played for contra dances for years, but is also an experienced caller.
