Ukraine Independence Day in Lewiston Maine

August 27, 2023 , 2:00 pm 3:30 pm

In 1991 Ukraine regained it’s independence from The Soviet Union and regained self-governance for the first time in one hundred fifty years. Come celebrate with the Ukrainian community by attending the concert at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The them is “Songs and Flowers for Ukraine” and the program is one of hopefulness and gratitude. Hopefulness that the war there will soon resolve; and gratitude that The Lady With The Lamp shared her beacon of freedom with people fleeing war from far away. At the base of the Statue of Liberty is the famous poem by Emma Lazarus saying ” Give me your tired, your poor…” and the Ukrainians are grateful to be safe. Refugees from other conflicts now sojourning in Lewiston are also welcome to attend and meet new neighbors.

This is a benefit concert and proceeds will go to the organizations here in Maine now providing refugee resettlement. Children are welcome. The suggested donation is $10 per person but people are asked to contribute what they can afford and  nobody will be turned away for lack of money.
